Nepal Foreign Affairs (KATHMANDU, 13 Sep 2017) – CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed discontent over the agreement reached with India for the construction of Koshi High Dam.

He thrashed Prime Minister Deuba for making an agreement with India without obtaining details consequences of building High Dam. With this statement of Dahal, a major coalition partner of Deuba, Koshi High Dam has been revealed as contentious issue within the ruling side.

Some analysts have different say on this. According to them, Prachanda has been raising this issue just as a tool to influence the voters as the election in province-2 is around the corner. Prachanda had never brought out these issues when he was heading government twice.

Speaking to media persons at Rajbiraj in Saptari district, Chairman Dahal said that it would not be favourable to forge an agreement with India regarding the construction of high dam without proper study. In course of election campaign, Dahal has been asking India to remove the Indian camp established temporarily in Biratnagar to support the flood victims of 2008. Even after the resettlements of flood victims and restoration of normalcy, the Indian camp has been there. Dahal never raised this issue with Indian government during his premiership.

CPN (MC) Chairman Dahal is in the district headquarters Rajbiraj to campaign for the upcoming third phase of local level election slated for September 18.“The government should take necessary steps only after a detailed study is conducted on whether constructing Koshi High Dam will be in the interest of Nepal or not,” said Dahal.

PM Deuba, during an election publicity meeting on Tuesday, had said that an agreement has been forged with India regarding the construction of Koshi High Dam as every year high dams on the Indian side causes massive flooding in the bordering areas of Nepal.
