Balkhu, Kathmandu

Excellency,

We have learnt to our great shock and profound sorrow of the sad and unexpected demise of Mr. Sushil Koirala, former Prime Minister of Nepal and serving President of Nepali Congress.  On behalf of the Government and the People of Bangladesh and on my own behalf, I convey our deepest condolences to you and through you, to the Nepali Congress and the people of Nepal.

I pay my deep respect to late Sushil Koirala who was a senior statesman and a popular leader of Nepal.  He steered the country at a critical period of its history when the nation was in the final stages of the process of Constitution writing.  He also displayed steadfast leadership and great skill in guiding the country during the challenging period after the Great Earthquake of April 2015.  His demise will be a loss not only for Nepal but for South Asian region as a whole.

We, in Bangladesh, will never forget the courageous and selfless role played by him during our glorious War of Liberation.  Bangladesh was proud to honour him as a “Friend of Bangladesh” in recognition and appreciation of his role at that crucial juncture of our history.  He earned the love and respect of the people and political leadership of Bangladesh.  We will surely miss his presence as a pre-eminent leader of the region.

We pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul.  We also pray that the Almighty grants his relatives and the people of Nepal the strength and fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss. Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

(Sheikh Hasina)

Prime Minister

Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh
