The Financial Express (Bangladesh, September 7)–Senior officials of the seven-nation grouping Bimstec-Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation – will start three-day negotiations in Thailand on Monday to have a final shape on the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA), reports UNB.
The member countries-Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand-are far behind the schedule in terms of conclusion of the FTA process as it was supposed to become effective in 2012.
The meeting of Bimstec Trade Negotiation Committee (TNC), to be held at Khon Kaen city in Thailand, will finalise four trade instruments to be signed in the 6th Bimstec Trade and Economic Ministers Meeting in Dhaka likely.
The meeting was supposed to take place in the capital in the middle of the current year but is now expected to take place at the end of February or early March next year.
