China’s top diplomat Wang Yi held a new round of candid, substantive and constructive China-US strategic communication with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Beijing from Tuesday to Wednesday, during which the two sides discussed a new round of interaction between the two countries’ heads of state in the near future.
Experts said that the strategic communication is essential in effectively managing the current bilateral relationship, and helps the US establish the correct understanding of China.
Wang, director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that the China-US relationship has been full of twists and turns, and the two sides should review the experiences and lessons, so as to find the right way for the two great powers to coexist, according to a readout from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
To keep China-US relations on the right track, the key lies in the guidance of the heads of state of both countries. Both sides should uphold the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, implement the consensus of the two heads of state, and promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-US relations, Wang said.
Wang emphasized that Taiwan belongs to China, and China will surely achieve reunification. “Taiwan independence” is the greatest risk to peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits. The US should put its promise of not supporting “Taiwan independence” into practice, abide by the one-China principle, stop arming Taiwan and support China’s peaceful reunification.
Sullivan stated the US is willing to continue strategic communication with China, enhance mutual understanding, and reduce misunderstandings and misjudgments, according to the readout.
Both sides agreed to continue to implement the important consensus reached at the San Francisco meeting between the two heads of state, maintain high-level exchanges and communication at all levels, and continue to carry out cooperation in drug control, law enforcement, repatriation of illegal immigrants and climate change mitigation.
The strategic guidance of the heads of state plays an extremely important role in ensuring the stability of the relationship between China and the US. The holding of China-US strategic communication is a concrete result under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, said Li Haidong, a professor from the China Foreign Affairs University.
The communication is essential for effectively managing the China-US relationship and promoting further cooperation and mutual benefit, Li said.
