Nepal Foreign Affairs (KATHMANDU, 20 May 2019) – House of Representatives members Ekwal Miyan and Pradip Yadav have expressed regrets, saying they happened to mistakenly attend a conference on Tibet in Riga of Latvia. The lawmakers’ conference on Tibet was organized in Riga on May 7 to 10.
The two lawmakers stated in a joint press statement today that they ‘happened to inadvertently attend the conference’ due to the wrong information that an international conference of lawmakers was taking place in Riga, the capital of Latvia, when they were on a private visit to Turkey, Switzerland and Latvia.
“When we came to know the reality of the conference, we immediately left the conference venue and returned home. We are regretful for our participation in the conference due to the erroneous information,” the lawmakers have said in the press statement.
They have also stated that they strongly support and are committed to the Constitution of Nepal, to the international relations determined by the existing laws and to the government’s ‘one China’ policy.
Likewise, the lawmaker duo has expressed their commitment to fully abide by the conditions and requirements for the members specified in the House of Representatives Regulations 2075, including the provisions related to the code of conduct that needed to be followed.
Talking to media persons in the premises of the Parliament Building, lawmaker Miyan said they met with the Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara today itself and explained the reality of the incident to him. The two lawmakers came under criticism after news of their attendance at the conference came in the media. They were accused of attending the meeting against the government’s ‘one China’ policy.
