Nepal Upholds Sovereign Equality as Cornerstone of Foreign Policy, Says Prime Minister Oli

Prime Minister Oli also reflected on the trade and transit agreement with China, which was signed during his previous tenure following India's blockade of Nepal in 2015, describing the agreement as a milestone in Nepal's diplomatic history.

KATHMANDU – Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli emphasized the importance of open diplomatic dialogue in resolving common issues between neighboring countries. Speaking at the launch of Blockade and Geopolitics, (Nakabandi ra Bhurajniti) a book authored by former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa, Prime Minister Oli highlighted that contentious issues can be effectively addressed through dialogue grounded in facts, evidence, and a balanced consideration of national interests and international responsibilities.

“Nepal fosters amicable relations with both its neighbors by adhering to principles of balance, honesty, and impartiality. We refrain from using our relationships with one neighbor against the other, and we do not harbor any animosity. Our land shall not be used in any manner that could jeopardize the security of neighboring countries. We remain committed to the principles of the United Nations and stand ready to assert when these principles are compromised. It is vital to present facts with clarity and reason. Our commitment to global peace and the safety of our citizens remains unwavering, and no country should seek to undermine the dignity of others for its own advantage,” stated Prime Minister Oli.

He further remarked that attributing internal challenges to the effects of geopolitics is counterproductive and underscored the need to uphold national dignity. The Prime Minister encouraged the Indian side to give due consideration to the report by the Group of Eminent Persons (EPG), established to review the 1950 treaty and other bilateral matters, expressing confidence that this would facilitate constructive dialogue on various issues, including the border dispute.

Prime Minister Oli also reflected on the trade and transit agreement with China, which was signed during his previous tenure following India’s blockade of Nepal in 2015, describing the agreement as a milestone in Nepal’s diplomatic history.

Former Foreign Minister Thapa, in his remarks, called for the implementation of the agreement with China and commended Prime Minister Oli for his forthright and fearless representation of national interests and dignity on the international stage.
