Nepali Ambassador to China meets Secretary-General of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (Press Release)



His Excellency Mahesh Kumar Maskey, Ambassador of Nepal to the People’s Republic of China met with His Excellency Dr. Dmitry Fyodorvich Mezentsev, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at the latter’s office in Beijing today. During the meeting, the Embassy and the SCO Secretariat discussed the potential areas of cooperation following Nepal’s entry into the SCO process as a new dialogue partner.

Ambassador Maskey thanked the SCO Secretariat for the role it played in welcoming Nepal to the SCO family as a dialogue partner. He expressed his confidence that the SCO would be an important platform for Nepal to give boost to its economy, which has been affected by the recent earthquakes, through the means of cooperation in economic development, cultural exchange and development of science, energy, technology and tourism sectors under SCO mechanisms.

Secretary-General Mezentsev mentioned that Nepal’s selection as dialogue partner is important for both the SCO and Nepal. It was informed during the meeting that Nepal would be admitted formally as dialogue partner after the signing of MoU between Secretary General and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal. The two sides will confirm the date and venue of signing in mutual consultation.

The meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere where both sides expressed their willingness to work together in the days ahead to substantiate the recent decision of the Ufa Summit by exploring the areas of mutual cooperation.

The 15th SCO Summit held in Ufa, the Russian Federation, in July 2015 had approved Nepal, together with Cambodia, Azerbaijan and Armenia as dialogue partners, while awarding full membership to India and Pakistan. The SCO member states include China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and its Secretariat is stationed in Beijing. It was established as an intergovernmental organization in 2001 in Shanghai, China.
