Nepal’s Legislation Committee endorses Nuclear bill

Nepal Foreign Affairs (KATHMANDU, 11 March 2020) – The Legislation Committee under the National Assembly today endorsed the Nuclear Bill-2075 BS drafted for the safe and peaceful use of nuclear and radioactive substances.

A meeting of the Committee today passed the bill following the completion of clause-wise deliberations about it. The House of Representatives (HoR) has already endorsed the bill. According to Committee president Parashuram Meghi Gurung, the Committee held in-depth discussions about the bill as the issue was technical. It will be presenting the document in the House on Thursday.

Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Giriraj Mani Pokharel said the Ministry had its consensus on the Committee agreement about the bill. The endorsement of the bill would pave the way for executing many works in pending. Though a separate authority was needed to regulate the use of nuclear and radioactive substances in view of its sensitivity and safety issues, the issue will be looked after by a departmental level organisational structure under the Ministry to reduce economic burden.

The bill incorporates the provisions for acquiring a license for carrying out activities relating to nuclear or radioactive substances and mechanism, regulation of such activities and punishment in the violation of set conditions and so on.
