MUSTANG- Prime Minister Balendra Shah pledged to call for greater global cooperation and collaboration to reduce and manage climate change-induced risks and disasters.
In his message to the Gharapajhong Climate Change Convention-2026 which began today in Mustang, PM Shah asserted that addressing the impacts of climate change was a shared responsibility of the international community.
Shah, thus, reiterated to draw global attention to the need for collective action to tackle the growing challenges.
The message also stated that PM Shah would highlight the problems, losses and damages Nepal has been facing due to climate change, along with possible solutions, during his address to the ongoing 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Furthermore, the message also said that PM Shah would draw national and international attention to the adverse impacts of climate change across Nepal’s Himalayan, hilly and Tarai regions.
Rising global temperatures have led to melting glaciers, breaking ice formations, increased glacial river flows, drying water sources and unpredictable weather patterns, the message noted.
“These changes have increasingly impacted people’s livelihoods, agriculture and biodiversity, particularly in the Himalayan region,” read the message.
Welcoming the organization of the conference in Jomsom, the headquarters of Mustang district, the Head of the Government emphasized the need for stronger cooperation among the federal, provincial and local governments for climate action.
It may be noted that the event was inaugurated by federal Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary.
Gharapajhong rural municipality is organizing the two-day event that will prioritize discussions on the risks posed by the climate crisis.
Attended by Chief of all 753 rural municipalities, municipalities and all 77 District Coordination Committees, the participants will also review the loss of lives and property caused by the August 26’s Bhotekoshi flood in Rasuwa as well.
The conference is taking place at a time when Nepal is grappling with the devastating consequences of a flood triggered by an avalanche, which swept through the Bhotekoshi and into the Trishuli River, causing a massive loss of lives and property. (RSS)
