Nepal Foreign Affairs (KATHMANDU, 11 January 2019) – President Bidya Devi Bhandari today attended a ceremony organised by the Nepal Academy to mark the 297th Prithvi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the late King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the unifier of a modern Nepal.
President Bhandari travelled to Bhadrakali Plaza straight from the Kamaladi based Academy, and laid a wreath at the statue of Prithvi Narayan Shah situated in front of the main entrance to the Singha Durbar.
On the occasion, she recalled the contributions of Shah to the unification of Nepal. Before the unification, Nepal was divided into several small principalities.
A contingent of Nepal Army presented a guard of honor to the Head-of-the-State.
Prithvi Narayan Shah was born on January 11, 1723 (Push 27, 1779 BS) in Gorkha to Kaushalyawati and Nara Bhupal Shah. The Divyopadesh, the messages that he had given towards the end of his life analyzing the then Nepal’s situation, are equally relevant in these days as well, said historians.
Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Banskota and former Council of Ministers chair Khilraj Regmi were also there to pay tributes to the King Prithvi Narayan Shah.
Rastriya Prajatantra Party chair Kamal Thapa, Ekikrit Rastriya Prajatantra Party ( Rastrabadi) chair Dr Prakash Chandra Lohani, other various political leaders, literary people, artists and people from different walks of life also paid floral tributes to the late king.
Prior to this, a cultural rally organised by various people’s level organisations such as Thakuri Sewa Samaj, Greater Nepal and Gunyu Cholo National Awareness Campaign Nepal arrived at the site to lay wreaths to the Prithvi Narayan’s statue.
