Shakya becomes first woman Chief Minister of Nepal



Nepal Foreign Affairs (KATHMANDU, 18 August 2021) – CPN-UML Vice-Chairperson Ashtalakshmi Shakya has become the first woman Chief Minister of the country. She is also the second Chief Minister of Bagmati Province.

Shakya took the oath of office and secrecy today before Province Chief Bishnu Prasai here today. The swearing-in ceremony held at the office of the Province chief was attended by prominent personalities of the state including the outgoing Chief Minister Dormani Poudel. Outgoing Chief Minister Poudel resigned from the post paving the way for Shakya to become the Chief Minister.

Leader Shakya has previously served as Minister of Industry, Women, Children and Social Welfare in the Government of Nepal. Earlier, Shakya was with UML’s Madhav Nepal faction but disagreed with the process of registering a new party and remained with the UML. Outgoing Chief Minister Poudel had proposed Shakya as the leader of the parliamentary party.
