TRC and CIEDP to be extended by a year with new office-bearers

Nepal Foreign Affairs (KATHMANDU, 29 January 2019) – The term of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on Investigation of Enforced Disappearances is to be extended by one more year. However, the two Commissions will have new office-bearers.

Accordingly, the government today registered a bill designed to amend the TRC and CIEDP Act, 2071. The term of both the Commissions is coming to an end on coming February 10.

“A bill has been registered to increase the term of the two commissions by a year but there is no provision to extend the term of the office-bearers,” Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Ramesh Dhakal said.

The term of the current office-bearers will come to an end in mid-April and hence the process to appoint the new office-bearers will begin before it, Dhakal said.

The two commissions were formed by the government on 10 February 2015 as part of a transitional justice mechanism to look into cases that took place during the ten-year-long conflict.

The commissions were envisaged to work for two years but could not complete its job even in three years, and got a one year extension last year through an ordinance.
